Sallee Hardy

Sallee Hardy, Secluded Oaks Trail, died June 24, 2008 at her home with her family at her side. A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 3, at First Congregational Church of Orange City, 201 W. University Avenue, in Orange City.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA she and her late husband, Neal J. Hardy, moved here in 1990. She began her journalistic career writing a weekly column for the Erie Dispatch on activities at Maryhurst Seminary for girls. She was employed by the Associated Press, NAHB homebuilders magazine and was the founding editor of the Housing and Urban Affairs Daily Newspaper. For several years she wrote the History is Alive column, for the News-Journal.
Active in League of Women Voters; served as President of the Chelsea-Greenwich Village League; served five years as a Non Governmental Observer, for the International Association for Religious Freedom at the United Nations; employed by the Democratic Headquarters, for the Lyndon B. Johnson Campaign; staff of the late Senator Joseph Clark D-PA; served as an Assistant to Dr. Leo Szilard, the father of the atomic bomb, helping to sort his records prior to moving to California from Washington, DC; Board member and Past President West Volusia Historical Society; recipient of West Volusia Historian of the Year; Life Member and former Board Member Orange City Library Association; former President of Orange City Cemetary Association; volunteer for American Cancer Society Research for Recovery; Board Member Afro-American Museum.
She is survived by her son, Scott L. Bashaw; stepsons, John Hardy and Van Hardy; beloved grandson, Kyle Bashaw and her cherised cocker spaniel, Sir Winston and innumerable friends, including Joanna McNeese, who provided for her care.
