James Joseph Kane
January 11, 1928 - July 21, 2008
James Joseph Kane, beloved husband of Ann Marie Kane, died July 21, 2008, after a year long battle with pancreatic cancer. Jim spent his life sharing his Catholic faith. He was a role model for his students during his 32 years of teaching, retiring from DeLand High School in 1989. A U.S. Navy veteran, Jim was also past president of the West Volusia Retired Educators Association and a 4th degree Knight of Columbus.
He brought his ministry of caring into the Florida Hospital DeLand as a Eucharistic Minister of the sick. In addition, Mr. Kane was a Cursillista, a Promise Keeper, a Hospice volunteer and in every way a man of faith. Friends will remember his humor, intelligence, quick wit and willingness to lend a hand whenever or wherever needed.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Anne Kane; three daughters; two nephews
and eight grandchildren. The eldest daughter is Margaret Cornelius of DeLand and her husband, Raymond Cornelius, and granddaughters, Genevieve Cherrett of Greenville, SC and her husband, Paul Cherrett, Mary Cornelius of Charleston, SC and Kate Cornelius of DeLand. The middle daughter is Kathryn Fisher of Centennial, CO and her husband, George, and grandchildren, Victoria and James Fisher. The youngest daughter is Frances Pendell of Aurora, CO and her husband, Tim Pendell; and grandchildren, T.J., Bridget and Jimmy Pendell. The two nephews are Michael Kane, Melbourne, FL, and his wife, Lynne, and Christopher M. Kane, Arlington, VA.
The viewing will be held at Lankford Funeral Home, DeLand, Thursday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, July 25, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in DeLand. Memorials may be made to Hospice of West Volusia/Flagler.
