Anselmo Irizarry-Acevedo

April 21, 1927 — June 3, 2025

Anselmo Irizarry Acevedo, lovingly known as Andy, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025, in DeLand, Florida, at the age of 98. Born on April 21, 1927, in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico, Andy was the second of four children of Serafin and Ana Luisa. His life journey took him from the warmth of Puerto Rico to the bustling streets of New York City, where he built a life grounded in family, service, and hard work.

Andy proudly served in the United States Army from 1948 to 1952 as a member of the 39th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion. After completing his military service, he returned to New York City where he met the love of his life, Gloria. Together, they created a family and a life rooted in devotion and resilience that spanned nearly seven decades.

Andy’s professional life reflected his determination and versatility. From working as a NYC taxi driver, to helping run a neighborhood bodega, to maintaining buildings and schools, Andy’s skills were as varied as they were vital. After relocating to South Florida, he capped off his working years with 17 years of service to the Broward County School Board before retiring and moving to DeLand with Gloria.

Even in retirement, Andy remained active and deeply involved in his community and family life. He was an accomplished athlete, playing baseball, softball, and stickball for over 60 years. A passionate supporter of the New York Giants and the New York Mets, Andy never lost his love for the game or for cheering on his favorite teams. He also shared his knowledge and love of sports with younger generations, coaching youth teams—especially those of his grandchildren.

Known for his sharp mind and practical hands, Andy was the go-to person if something needed fixing. From engines to leaky faucets, there was little he couldn’t repair. And in quieter moments, Andy had a penchant for breaking into song, especially with his renditions of "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Perhaps, Perhaps"—melodies that now echo as cherished memories in the hearts of those who knew him.

Andy is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Gloria, and their four children: Frank Irizarry, Nancy Burnett, Shirley Little, and Gloria Rosenhoch. His legacy continues through his 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, each a testament to the strength, humor, and wisdom he imparted throughout his long life.

A funeral service will be held on June 15, 2025, at Lankford Funeral Home in DeLand, Florida. A viewing will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, followed by a service from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. A Celebration of Life with food and refreshments will be held immediately after at City Sanctuary Church, located at 401 East Taylor Road in DeLand.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Disabled American Veterans at DAV.org.

Andy’s life was one of strength, service, and song. He leaves behind a family grateful for every story, every laugh, and every tune he carried with him. He will be deeply missed, but lovingly remembered.
