William G. “Bill” Rentz
March 30, 1947 – June 21, 2025
William G. “Bill” Rentz, 78, rode off into the sunset on June 21, 2025, in DeLand, FL. Born on March 30,1947, in Bradenton, FL, Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Audrey and George Rentz; his sister, Terri Rentz Chiodo and nephew, Michael McKechnie.
A proud graduate of DeLand High School, Bill purchased the family business from his father, Rentz Upholstery, where he worked with pride and precision until his well-earned retirement.
Bill was a cowboy at heart—a true Florida cracker. While he once sported around town in a yellow Corvette, he eventually traded horsepower for actual horses, cattle, leather, antlers, and everything western. His passion for animals ran deep, and while not a licensed vet, he was the one neighbors called when an animal needed help—sometimes people too! Bill always kept a cool head, rugged sense of humor and a steady hand, earning him respect across the community.
He was deeply involved in his community, particularly with the Volusia County Fair Association, where he served in many roles including president, assistant Treasurer and head of security. He also proudly supported local youth through the Volusia County Stock Show Syndicate, Inc., and the Volusia County Cattlemen’s Association, and on the FFA Advisory Committee. Bill’s heart was always with the next generation, and he loved helping youth find their way into agriculture and fair life.
A devoted father, grandfather, and friend, Bill is survived by his son Troy (Erica) Rentz, and daughter Audrey Rentz; grandchildren Billy Rentz,(named after his Grandfather) and Zeus Hernandez; his brother, Chris Rentz; sisters, Mary (Bill) Johnson, Kathy (Jeff) Forte, and Debbie McKechnie; nephews, Steve McKechnie, Brian and Kevin Johnson; and many other nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who will carry his memory forward.
Bill was also a former altar boy at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, where his early faith began. He lived life on his own terms and often said, Live like someone left the gate open. That attitude carried him through a full life marked by laughter, storytelling, and service.
Known for his wisdom, humor and hard working nature, Bill had an uncanny attention to detail. He left a legacy of kindness and cowboy grit and was a source of strength, joy, and great stories to everyone who knew him.
A gathering to celebrate Bill’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at the Tommy Lawrence Arena at the Volusia County Fairgrounds. The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., followed by a short memorial service beginning at 5:30 p.m. Guests are then invited to stay for food, laughter, and the sharing of memories until 7:00 p.m.
Flowers are welcome, or donations may be made to the family to support future youth awards and scholarships in Bill’s honor.
He was a cowboy, a craftsman, a community man—and most of all, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
