Charles L. Shaw, beloved husband of Nataya Kochasuntorn, passed away on February 28, 2026, in Daytona Beach, Florida. He was born on October 31, 1940, in the Borough of Queens, New York, the eldest child of Clara and Charles Shaw. Much of his childhood was spent in Bellerose Terrace, New York, where he grew up to develop the curiosity and determination that would characterize his life.
As a young boy, Charles served Mass as an altar boy at St. Anthony of Padua in Greenpoint. From an early age, he showed a natural fascination with how things worked. Family members often recalled how he would take apart radios and televisions simply to understand their inner workings—usually managing to put them back together again. One uncle, stationed in Europe during World War II, was so concerned about this budding hobby that he wrote home urging his mother to keep her young grandson away from his radio—Charles was not yet five years old at the time. His curiosity extended beyond electronics; before the age of ten he managed to put the family car into gear and back it into the street while the family lived in Brooklyn.
Charles graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, New York, in 1958. He later received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1962. He went on to serve his country with distinction as an Army Ranger in the Airborne divisions, completing two tours of duty in Vietnam and later being posted to Thailand. His dedication to service continued throughout a long military career, from which he retired in 1987. Even decades later, his adventurous spirit remained strong—during his 50th West Point reunion he participated in a memorable buddy parachute jump.
Following his retirement from the Army, Charles obtained a pilot's license. He also became a certified Project Manager. His expertise led him overseas where he oversaw the installation of cable television infrastructure throughout Malaysia. After completing that project, he moved to Sanford, Florida, where he continued his work in telecommunications with Bright Intervoice, overseeing television cable installation projects.
Outside of his professional life, Charles had many passions. He was an avid long-distance bicyclist and deeply enjoyed spending time outdoors and in nature. His lifelong curiosity, mechanical aptitude, and love of adventure were hallmarks of his character and were admired by those who knew him.
Charles was the eldest of four children and is survived by his sisters Mary and Adrienne (Kevin O’Connor), and his brother John. He was the loving father of Charles Jr. and Anne Marie (Michael Stoppa), and a proud grandfather to Dylan and Benjamin.
Charles will be remembered for his intelligence, curiosity, adventurous spirit, and dedication to his family and country. His life was one of service, exploration, and enduring love for those around him.
