D. Leon Saunders, 96, passed away on January 7, 2024 surrounded by his loving family after a short illness. Leon was born on December 21 1927, in Key West, Florida as a third generation “conch”. A very accomplished member of the greatest generation, Leon founded Lower Keys Plumbing in Key West providing residential and commercial service to many Keys families and enterprises. While in his early 40’s, Leon sold that business and moved to DeLand, Florida to follow his dream of a ranch life for his first retirement. After raising horses and cattle, he found that his business skills and talent were still in demand so he started Colonial Plumbing in DeLand and ran that business for many years until his second retirement. Sharing homes in both DeLand and Steinhatchee, Florida. Leon spent the next 31 years traveling, boating and fishing, returning many times to his island in the sun. Leon is survived by his wife Amy, daughters Marilyn Mancinik (Bill), Marlene Thomas (Kevin), Maureen Kemp (Chris), 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. A lifelong Christian, Leon was a man of high integrity and moral standards. He served in US Army National Guard and was a 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rites. He led a full and enviable life. Private interment in Key West Cemetery. A service and celebration of life will be held at the Deltona Presbyterian Church, Deltona, Florida, Saturday, January 13, 2024, 11AM.
