On July 13, 2025 Eleanor Elizabeth Laslie Griffin went to rest with the Lord. She passed at home with family. Eleanor is is described by her loved ones as having never met a stranger. She will be remembered by everyone she knew for her infectious smile, laughter, and dedication to others.
The fifth of nine children, Eleanor was born at home to Annie Berry Laslie and Joseph T. Laslie on December 1, 1938. Her childhood was spent on the family shade tobacco farm, Oakdale, located near Attapulgus, Georgia. In the 7th grade Eleanor met the love of her life, Taylor. The pair married in 1960 and celebrated 65 years of marriage this past year. Upon completing her History BA at Wesleyan College in Macon Georgia in 1960, Eleanor began a long career as a teacher.
In 1970 Eleanor and her family moved to DeLand, Florida. There she was active in civic and community life. Her involvement included President of the Junior League, Queen of the Krewe of Amalee, Board of Directors of The House Next Door, and helping start the Dog Parade. She received the DeLand Jaycee Humanitarian Award for life long service to her community.
Eleanor's passions included gardening, tennis, golf, and bridge. She and her husband were avid travelers, together they saw the entire country and most of the world. Eleanor loved to spend time with family, including her grandchildren, by whom she was affectionately known as E, and numerous nieces and nephews. Lastly, she adored her little white dog, Madi.
Eleanor is preceded in death by her parents and siblings Joan Livingston, Martha Jean Woodward, Mary Gardner, and Lt. Joseph T. Laslie, Jr. (USMC). She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Taylor Wood Griffin, Jr., her daughter Leslie Griffin Gayne and son in law Bill Gayne of Richmond, VA, her son Taylor Wood Griffin III of Ormond Beach, FL, her grandchildren Trey and Griffin Gayne, her sisters Beulah Brinson Bird, Harriet Laslie Reynolds, and her brothers John Laslie and Berry Laslie.
