She is also survived by two brothers, Craig James and Gregory James, and a sister, Kathlyn Harris, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
After moving to DeLand in the late 1940’s she attended Boston Avenue Elementary School. Later she would be employed at Boston Avenue as a kindergarten teacher. She graduated from DeLand High School in 1956 where she was a member of Keyettes Service Club and Glee Club. After high school she went to Forsyth, GA. to attend Tift College. She then came back to DeLand and graduated from Stetson University with her degree in Education. She was a sister in Alpha Zi Delta sorority.

As a long-time member of Stetson Baptist Church, she took an active role in helping the church become the beautiful place of worship it is today. She often taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday school classes. Working hard to live in a way that showed others God’s mercy and love was a top priority throughout her life. Gayle was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Love and devotion to her family came second only to her dedication to God.
Many will remember Gayle most for her love of hosting friends and family in her home. Countless teachers get togethers, bridal luncheons, baby showers, Sunday school parties, Garden Circle teas and family gatherings were held in her charge under her watchful eye. Holidays were her favorites when everyone would gather at Gayle and Phil’s for a celebration. She always took great pride in welcoming guests, decorating her home for the occasion, setting a beautiful table and making everyone feel special. Gayle was also well known for her flower arranging skills. She made beautiful centerpieces for many occasions, often using the camellias and greenery grown in her own yard. She was a true southern lady.
