George M. Clifton, 72 of DeLand, Florida, lost his courageous battle with cancer on November 4, surrounded by his loving family.
A lifelong resident of DeLand, George graduated from DeLand High School and the University of Florida, where his passion for golf began. He and his brothers could often be found playing golf together at the DeLand Country Club, a place that became a second home to him. Following in his father’s footsteps, George pursued a lifelong career as a golf course architect. George, Kenny Ezell and Lloyd became full time Golf Design Partners in 1987. Clifton Ezell Clifton (CEC) have over 90 various golf projects stretching from Florida into the Carolina’s, Texas and Alabama. In 1984, George helped his father design the first course at The Villages. Since 1989, they have created 801 holes of golf, helping The Villages to become the largest golf community in the world.
In 1991, CEC and partners signed a long-term Ground Lease with Ocoee to design, privately fund, build and operate Forest Lake Golf Course which became one of the most successful daily fee clubs in Florida. George was creative beyond golf design creating his own signature hamburger and cocktail at Forest Lake – so next time out have a “George Burger” and raise your cup with a “Miss Vickey”.
George’s greatest joy, however, was his family. He never met a stranger - though he might not always remember your name, he’d greet you with his trademark smile, a big hug, and a warm handshake. His presence had a way of making everyone feel like a lifelong friend. His sense of humor was somewhat dry but would bring laughter to all those that got it. When he found out the diagnosis his comment was, “It is what it is” and his positivity never wavered. George looked to his faith and his love of God for comfort, knowing that this is not his eternal home.
A devoted member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, George’s faith in God guided him every day. He was known for inspiring others to come to church, to believe, and to live each day as the true gift it is. When he wasn’t working or serving others, George could be found bass fishing on Lake Daugharty or Lake Diaz with his wife, children, family and friends or watching his beloved Florida Gators play football. He cherished time spent around the table sharing meals, laughter, a White Claw or two and stories with family and friends - both old and new.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Bonnie Clifton, and his grandson, Hardie. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 39 years, Terri Tennant Clifton; son, John Hardie Clifton (Hannah); daughter, Morgan Graf (Johnny); brothers, Lloyd Clifton (Virginia) and Craig Clifton (Patty); four grandchildren; Aurora, Rowan, Noah and Nazareth and countless friends who became like family.
A service celebrating George’s life will be held at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, on November 15, 2025 at 11:00 am.
