George Abercrombie Wright passed away peacefully at his home in DeLand on February 19, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 81 years old.
George was born on April 15, 1944, in Gainesville, Florida, to Moses Conrad Wright and Ruby Helms Wright. He was raised in Cross City, where he developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors that would shape both his education and his career. He went on to attend the University of Florida, earning a degree in Forestry and Engineering — a field that perfectly reflected his love of nature and his analytical mind.
George was a man who embraced life fully. He had a passion for travel and adventure, and alongside his beloved wife, Marywayne Wright, he explored destinations across the globe. Together, they created a lifetime of memories, experiencing new cultures, landscapes, and friendships wherever they went. One of his greatest joys was camping with his family but would never miss watching a Florida Gators football game.
George is survived by his devoted wife, Marywayne Wright; his children, Leif Wright and Brett Miley (John); his stepdaughters, Robyn Voigt (Harold) and Susan Kidd (Brett); and his treasured grandchildren, Audrey Scott (Royce), Christopher Kidd, Matthew Voigt, Davis Kidd, Jessica Voigt, Madelyn Wright, and Willie Wright. He is also survived by his brother, Jimmy Wright, and his sister, Mary Prime.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bill Wright.
George will be remembered for his strength, his steady presence, and his love of the outdoors. His legacy lives on in the lives of those he loved and in the many memories shared by family and friends.
Honoring George’s wishes there will be no service. The family asks in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
