James Duke Ward

January 31, 1960 — June 18, 2025

James Duke Ward, affectionately known by all as simply “Duke,” passed away on June 18, 2025, in Oakland, Florida. He was 65 years old.

Born on January 31, 1960, at Fish Hospital in DeLand, Florida, Duke was the firstborn son of John Robert and Martha Jean Ward. He spent his formative years in DeLand, DeLeon Springs, and Kissimmee, though his roots remained deepest in the DeLand area, where he grew up surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and an abundance of cousins.

Duke was known for his unwavering work ethic and fierce dedication to any task he undertook. A skilled heavy equipment operator and gifted mechanic, he had a natural talent for machinery and could repair nearly anything. His proficiency earned him numerous certifications and the respect of everyone who worked alongside him. He took pride in a job well done, never complained about work, and always gave his all.

Duke’s passion for speed and mechanics was reflected in his love of racing. Whether it was tearing up the track in his custom-built rail buggies or skimming across the water in his high-powered airboats, Duke thrived in the thrill of competition. He didn’t just participate — he excelled, claiming numerous race wins and trophies over the years.

Beyond his talents, Duke will be remembered most for his heart. He had a deep well of kindness and was known to brighten the lives of those around him with thoughtful gestures — like surprising his neighbors with deep-fried turkeys during the holidays. He had a particular fondness for animals, especially cats, and was absolutely devoted to his grandchildren — both biological and “adopted.” To them, he was a softie with a big heart, always ready with a smile and unconditional love.

Duke was preceded in death by his father, John “Bobby” Ward; stepmother, Carole Ward; mother, Martha Nibler; stepfather, Frank Nibler; and beloved grandson, Robert Alan Nutter.

He is survived by his daughter, Kacey Ward; grandchildren; brother, Steve Ward (Kristi); sister, Teresa Ward (Robert); brothers, Mark Creese (Carrie) and Chris Creese (Terri); and a large circle of nieces, nephews, friends, and loved ones whose lives he touched in countless ways.

A Celebration of Life honoring Duke’s memory will be announced at a later date.

Duke’s legacy of hard work, generosity, and passion for life will continue to inspire all who knew him. He lived fast, loved deeply, and gave his all — and the world was better for it.
