Larry Richard Mills

Larry R. Mills, Sr., of DeLand, Florida, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2026, at Alliance Nursing Home in DeLand. He was 72 years old.

Born on September 28, 1953, at Fish Memorial Hospital in DeLand, Larry was a proud third-generation resident of Volusia County who spent his life serving his community and caring for those around him.

Larry served honorably for five and a half years in the United States Army National Guard. He dedicated 21 years of service to the City of DeLand Fire Department, retiring with the rank of Captain. Throughout his firefighting career, he received several Outstanding Fireman Awards in recognition of his commitment, courage, and service.

Following his retirement from the fire department, Larry continued his entrepreneurial spirit through several local businesses. Most notably, he owned and operated Larry R. Mills Services, Inc., a septic service company, for 20 years. The family business remains in operation today under the ownership of his son.

Larry enjoyed life's simple pleasures and cherished time spent with family and friends. He loved playing guitar, watching NASCAR races, working in his yard, relaxing by his pool, deer hunting, riding his Harley-Davidson, and tinkering in his shop. He was known for his quick wit and playful nature, especially when entertaining children with his memorable Donald Duck voice, which never failed to bring laughter and smiles.

Above all, Larry was devoted to his family. He shared 54 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Donna Mills. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Michelle Nance (Jimmy Nance), and Mindy Mills (Richard Watson); his son, Larry R. Mills, Jr., also known as Richard (Cynthia Mills); 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Ronnie Mills (Joan Mills) and Timothy Mills; and his sisters, Laurie Payne and Patty Hersey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Mills and Virginia Payne, his daughter, Melissa Mills, and his sister-in-law, Juanita Mills.

Larry's legacy of service, hard work, humor, and love for family will be remembered by all who knew him.

A private family memorial service will be held at Lankford Funeral Home on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. A public memorial service will follow at 12:30 p.m.
