Listen to Obituary

Lester Ray Staton, fondly known as “Les,” a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of curiosity, service, and quiet but steadfast love.

Les was born on July 4, 1951, in Gumaken, Japan, to Billie Staton, who served in the military, and Teruko “Rosie” Staton. His early years were shaped by a life of travel before his family ultimately settled in Orlando, Florida, where he grew up alongside his brother, Kenny.

He graduated from Bishop Moore High School and went on to earn his degree from Florida Southern College. In 1971, Les began what would become a remarkable 45-year journey with Walt Disney World, starting as a part-time employee when the park first opened. Shortly thereafter, he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Navy. From 1972 to 1976, he served during the Vietnam War, including participation in the Vietnam Refugee Operation in Guam. Following his honorable discharge, Les returned to Walt Disney World, where he built a long and respected career, eventually specializing in telecommunications.

Les had an insatiable curiosity and a deep appreciation for learning. He was especially passionate about the history of Walt Disney World, having read nearly every book written on the subject. His love of the water led him to embrace a wide range of activities, including fishing, swimming, water skiing, diving, kayaking, and paddle boarding. He also enjoyed music, explored learning the drums, practiced archery, took up golf, and even took roller skating lessons as an adult—always eager to try something new. Determined to overcome fears, he learned to ride horses and later devoted many years volunteering at local horse rescue farms. He also enjoyed sports, playing softball with his church and spending time at the batting cages.

Known affectionately as “the Mayor” of his street, Les never met a stranger. He had a gift for conversation and connection, making everyone feel welcome. Though he was often a man of few words in emotional moments—frequently relying on phrases like “ditto” or “it is what it is”—his love was unmistakable through his actions. He was a doer, always showing up for the people he cared about. In recent years, as his health slowed him down, it was a difficult adjustment for someone whose spirit was so active and engaged with the world.

Les is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Janet Staton; his son, Matthew Staton; his daughter, Karen Warnick, and son-in-law, Bobby Warnick; and his cherished grandchildren, Mallory and Kellen Warnick. He is also survived by his brother, Kenny Staton, and sister-in-law, Fran Staton; nieces Laura Kraubetz and Jennifer Avery; and sister-in-law Patti McKay.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on April 13, 2026 at Lankford Funeral Home 220 East New York Avenue Deland, Florida 32724.

Les will be remembered for his steady presence, his endless curiosity, and the quiet, unwavering way he loved his family and friends. His life was one of action, kindness, and genuine connection—and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
