Michael “Mike” Edward Simonds passed away on September 3, 2026, at Halifax Health Hospice Care Center in Orange City, Florida, surrounded by the love of his family.
Mike was born on February 5, 1948, in Ducktown, Tennessee, and was raised among the mountains of Western North Carolina, a place that remained an important part of the story of his life. One of four children, Mike distinguished himself from an early age with an exceptionally bright and curious mind. He was such a gifted student that he skipped two grades in elementary school, beginning a lifelong love of learning, reading, thinking, and discovering how things worked.
He continued his education at Middle Georgia Junior College before transferring to Auburn University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from Georgia State University.
Mike’s intelligence was matched by an inventive and creative spirit. Over a career that took him from Georgia to Florida, where he made his home for the last 45 years, he built a successful career as an engineer and plant manager. He was a gifted problem-solver whose work even resulted in a patent. He took great satisfaction in solving difficult problems and creating things that had not existed before.
Yet, for all his professional accomplishments, the most important part of Mike’s life was his family.
Mike met the love of his life, Jo Ann Penson, when he was just 19 years old. They married several months later, beginning a partnership that would span 58 years. Together, Mike and Jo Ann built a life centered on family and raised three children: Derek Simonds, Dana Bailey, and Dawn Tuell.
With the arrival of his seven grandchildren, Mike took on one of his most cherished roles and became affectionately known as “Poppa.” He loved his family deeply and leaves behind a legacy of devotion that extends far beyond the accomplishments of his career. His children and grandchildren will remember a man who was present in their lives, interested in their stories, proud of their accomplishments, and always ready to share a story of his own over a big bowl of ice cream.
Mike possessed a rare combination of intelligence, creativity, humor, and kindness. He was known for his laughter and unmistakable dry wit. A passionate storyteller and talented writer, he had a gift for words and an ability to make a story come alive. He was also an avid reader whose curiosity never left him. He enjoyed ideas, conversation, and learning, and he carried that inquisitive spirit throughout his life.
Those who knew Mike will remember not simply what he accomplished, but who he was: a devoted husband, loving father and Poppa, gifted thinker, storyteller, and a man whose humor and presence made life richer for the people around him.
After 58 years of marriage, three children, seven grandchildren, a lifetime of stories, and a career spent imagining and solving what others could not, Mike leaves behind a life of lasting influence. His greatest legacy can be found in the family he loved so deeply and in the countless memories, stories, laughter, and lessons they will carry forward.
Mike will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
The family will receive family and friends at their home from 2:00–4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 6, to remember Mike and celebrate his life.
