Ronald John Welter, born February 12, 1967, in Teaneck, New Jersey. Passed away on September 15, 2025 leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and adventure that will never be forgotten.

“Ronald later resided in Chokoloskee, Florida. Ronald lived a life full of service, adventure, and love. He proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine during Desert Storm, later graduating from Middle Tennessee State University and earning his law degree from Jacksonville. Ronald also followed his passion for the outdoors as a fishing boat captain, spending countless hours fly-fishing in Florida’s Everglades and exploring the waters of Alaska.” (S.W)

“Ron grew up with a spirit as bold as it was kind. He proudly served as a Marine, carrying that honor with him throughout his life. Later, he followed his true passion and became a full-time fishing guide in the Everglades, where his deep love for the water and his uncanny ability to handle a boat — practically with his eyes closed — made him a natural.” (G.H)

“Ronald enjoyed fishing, riding his bike, and canoeing, but most of all, he cherished time with his family and grandchildren. He was always eager to hear what they were up to, and when he called his mother, he would greet her with a loving, “Mommy!” (S.W)

He is survived by his mother, Joan Rousseau; his sons Stewart Welter (Natalia), with grandchildren Jaxson and Sienna; Garrett Hornbuckle (Danielle), with grandchildren Ella, Walker, and Wyatt; and daughter Bailey Hornbuckle (Dylan), with grandchildren Royce and Liam. He also leaves behind his sisters, Deborah White (William, deceased) and Susan Kubitz (David), and his devoted girlfriend, Sandy Fink. Ronald also had several nieces and nephews.

Those who knew Ron will remember him as someone who made life fun and full of surprises. He had a way of showing up, unannounced, with food in hand or simply asking, “What’s for dinner?” He spoke his own language, filled with nicknames and sayings that only he could dream up, and he had a gift for making people laugh and feel welcome.

Ronald was preceded in death by his father, Stewart Welter.

A celebration of Ron’s life will be held on October 4, 2025, 11am at 629 S Pine St. New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169. He will be deeply missed, but the stories, laughter, and love he gave will live on in all who were blessed to know him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Captains for Clean Water in memory of Captain Ron Welter. Donations can be made online at: https://captainsforcleanwater.org/
