Thomas Edward Hume, 88, of DeLand, Florida, formerly of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 28, at DeLand Advent Hospital.
Born on October 21, 1937, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, Tom was the son of the late George Addison Hume and Pauline Emma (Green) Hume. He was raised in Bethlehem, where he developed the values and love for family that stayed with him throughout his life.
Tom earned his bachelor’s degree from LaSalle College and then proudly served in the United States Army for two years, receiving an honorable discharge. Following his military service, he joined the accounting department at Bethlehem Steel, where he rose to the role of Financial Controller before retiring after 33 years.
After retiring, Tom moved to DeLand, Florida, where he enjoyed the warmth and sunshine in his later years.
Tom was a devoted Catholic, a loving husband, and an exceptional father. He was deeply respected by all who knew him as a kind and honest man. His children looked up to him as a role model and are forever grateful for the support and guidance he provided throughout their lives.
He was a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Eagles. He and his son Tom would often talk on the phone while watching Eagles games together, celebrating the team’s two Super Bowl championships in the past 10 years. He loved to stay active— running, biking, and working out at the local DeLand YMCA. He also generously gave his time volunteering at Holy Family Manor and found great joy in reading and working on puzzles.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Doris Hume; his brother, Jim Hume, and his wife, Carol; his three children, Melissa Conway and her husband, Tom; Jennifer Marsico and her husband, Dennis; and Thomas Hume Jr.; and his eight cherished grandchildren: Ryan, Connor, Brendan, Emma, and Max Marsico; Andie and Luke Hume; and Fikire Conway.
He will be deeply missed by his family, who are forever grateful to have had him as a wonderful husband, father, and role model for 88 years.
