Richard F. Murphy "Dickie"

Richard F. Murphy "Dickie"

May 11, 2023 was a sad day for many when we lost a legend. Richard F. Murphy aka Dickie took his last breath at 420pm, and left behind his ex-wife Susie, son Tomas S. Murphy, grandson, daughter Kathleen F. Murphy, granddaughter Sophie G. Green, Sister-n-law Penny Murphy, nephew James Murphy, and niece Jeannie Murphy, also preceded in death by: father William E. Murphy, mother Lillian G. Murphy, brothers Billy and Larry Murphy, and nephew Joseph Murphy.

Richard Francis Murphy was born January 23rd, 1942 in Bridgeport, Connecticut to William E. Murphy and Lillian G. Murphy. Although the family lived in Brockton, Massachusetts, his mom was pregnant and they were visiting friends in Bridgeport, Connecticut when stubborn little Dickie decided to announce himself to the world.

Richard Francis Murphy was definitely one of a kind. He was passionate about racing and cars his whole life. Street racing in Miami and hanging out at pizza palace led to his career at a young age owning his own gas station in Miami, Florida. After 8 years of owning the gas station in Miami, Florida he decided to sell and move to Clemson, South Carolina to develop Clemson Forrest.

As developing the neighborhood of Clemson Forrest, he never lost the urge of racing. In 1982 he had a great opportunity and bought Volusia County Speedway, which now is known as Volusia Speedway Park. He put all his heart and soul in running that track for 23 years. After retiring in 2005, he never stopped the love for racing and now lays to rest as he made his final lap.

Services will be held at Lankford Funeral Home on Saturday May 20th, 2023. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM with a funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial to follow at Oakdale Cemetery in DeLand.
