Stanley Ray Mitchell

August 1, 2022

Stanley Ray Mitchell, age 79, passed away on August 1. 2022 in DeLand, Florida, after complications from surgery. He was the only son born to Stanley and Betty (Hill) Michell of Bridgeman, Michigan, on December 20, 1942.

Before graduating from Lakeshore High School in Stevensville, Michigan, Stan was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. He went on to receive a BS from Indiana of Technology, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and a PhD in chemistry from the University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky. While at Indiana Tech, Stan was one of the original brothers who chartered the Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter on that campus. At the University of Kentucky, Stan was instrumental in the creation of the Graduate Student Association. Incidentally, Stan held certificates as a Master Gardener, scuba diver and pilot of single-winged aircraft.

Stan’s professional life centered around the pharmaceutical industry in quality control. He was fortunate enough to have designed and developed laboratories and manufacturing plants to comply with federal standards.

His interests were always complex and varied. As a teen, Stan rebuilt an engine in his first car. Later, using some of the skills his father taught him, Stan rebuilt a TR4 from the frame up. He was a life-long learner who was always willing to share information with others. Stan was an accomplished cook, delighting everyone with his culinary experiments.

In retirement, Stan loved being active and involved. To continue his flying interest, he was on the DeLand Airport Board and participated in activities of the the Commemorative Airforce. To support his second passion, he was heavily involved with Florida’s boating community supporting The Lake Beresford Yacht Club as Commodore and serving, as a flag officer, on state-wide yachting boards.

Since 1966, Stan was married to Crysella (Cris Setterberg). Together they loved to boat, travel, play bridge and mentor teens. Kentucky Derby Parties, educational and culture activities kept them busy.

Stan is survived by his sweet kitty, GreyBoy , his loving wife of 56 years Cris Mitchell, and his loyal sisters Mary Rath. Debbie Clark and Judy (Michael) Gillen, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Stan’s Life Celebration will be held on Sunday, September 11 at 3pm. Please bring your memories to The Lake Beresford Yacht Club, 1961 Hontoon Road, Deland, Florida, 32720. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Lake Beresford Yacht Club or The DeLand Elks #1463, 1543 South Alabama, DeLand, Florida, 32720.
