David (Dave) Alex Meier

4/22/2024

David (Dave) Alex Meier, age 77, of DeLand, FL went up to the “spirit in the sky” on April 22, 2024, from Parkinson’s related causes. He was born to Alexander R. and Mary (Potts) Meier in Somers Point, New Jersey on February 22, 1947.

Dave enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served aboard the U.S.S. Berkeley as a radio operator during the Viet Nam War. Upon discharge, he attended Santa Monica College and Chico State in California. In 1976 he moved to Key West, FL where he met his future wife, Donna (also born in Somers Point, NJ). Together they built a catamaran sailboat in their backyard in the Lower Keys. For 6 ½ years they lived aboard the “Hallelujah” and cruised the Florida Keys, Bahamas, and rivers and waterways of Florida.

Dave was multitalented and had many occupations including boat carpenter, home construction, painter, and respiratory therapist. He enjoyed reading newspapers, writing letters to the editor, home improvement projects, going to the gym, kayaking, bike riding, touring historic homes and museums, visiting botanical gardens, hiking on nature trails, and going to the beach. One of Dave’s favorite expressions was, “It’s another beautiful day in paradise.”

Dave leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Donna Marie Meier. He is also survived by his sisters Katrina (Bob) Kirkeby of Orange, CA and Susan (Russ) Taylor of Prescott, AZ, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in death by his parents and brother, Michael Meier.

Lankford Funeral Home is handling his cremation. A celebration of Dave’s life will be held at a later date.

The family wishes to extend thanks to the caring team at VITAS Hospice.
