02/28/2023

Joan T. Hall, age 90, of DeLand, died Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at Good Samaritan Society/Florida Lutheran Center in DeLand, Florida. A memorial mass is planned for Saturday, May 13, 2023 at St. Peter Catholic Church, West New York Ave, DeLand at 10:00 am.

Joan was born November 15, 1932 in Valley Stream, New York. She married the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Hall Sr., on September 13, 1953 in Elmont, New York. They were able to celebrate 69 years together as husband and wife.

Joan worked for the New York Telephone and Telegraph Company as a telephone operator and supervisor in Queens, New York before moving to Florida. While her husband was attending the University of Florida in Gainesville, Joan continued her work with Southern Bell. After a short stay in Centereach, Long Island, the couple moved to DeLand in 1965. In 1977 she and her husband, Dick, became owners of Smith Feed and Seed Co. in DeLand where she assisted customers in the nursery and feed store. She was co-owner of Pioneer Farm and Garden, Inc. in Ormond Beach and co-owner of Pioneer Pest Services, Inc., in DeLand.

Joan was a homemaker and avid reader. She wrote poetry and was a member and published poet with the Florida State Poets Association. In her younger years she enjoyed water skiing and eventually went on to become a runner, medaling in several races. Joan loved visiting and camping at State and National Parks throughout the United States, where she enjoyed hiking and canoeing. She was extremely proud of her family and loved to brag about her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to anyone that would lend an ear.

Joan is survived by her three grown children and spouses: Rick Hall Jr. (Leslie) of DeLand, Terry Sue Wallace (Rob) of DeLeon Springs, and Joie McGee (Scott) of Green Cove Springs, Florida; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward Fromm, of Arizona, and 3 nieces.
