08/05/2023

William E. "Bill" Churms, a beloved figure in the DeLand, FL community, passed away on August 5, 2023, at the age of 93. Bill was a visionary entrepreneur and a dedicated family man whose impact on the local area was immeasurable. Born in DeLand, FL on Nov. 10, 1929. Bill's journey was one of resilience, determination, and boundless creativity. He was the proud owner of the iconic Pop Shop, a cornerstone of the community, where people of all ages gathered for treats and conversation. Bill's entrepreneurial spirit was further exemplified by his establishment of the Highway-Curb Produce Market in DeLeon Springs, FL. His innovative approach to business helped shape the landscape of the area, with additional locations further enriching the lives of residents.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bill's zest for life was reflected in his diverse range of hobbies. An avid golfer, tennis enthusiast, and fishing aficionado, he reveled in the great outdoors. His green thumb was evident through his passion for yard work and gardening, a reflection of his nurturing spirit and connection to the natural world. And of course, his adventures to Biloxi, Mississippi added a touch of excitement to his life, highlighting his love for exploration and entertainment. He proudly served in the Navy on the U.S.S. Piedmont during the Korean War.

Bill's greatest source of pride and joy, however, was his family. He is survived by his sons, Danny, Jody, and Katie Churms, as well as his cherished grandchildren, Kaylee and Hannah Churms. Their love and close-knit bond brought warmth and meaning to his life, and his legacy will undoubtedly live on through them.

Bill's journey was marked by both triumph and loss. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty, and his son, David. He also mourned the passing of his brothers, Jack and Don. Despite these heartaches, Bill's resilience and strength of character shone through, inspiring those around him to persevere through life's challenges.

A service to celebrate Bill's life will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2023, 11:00 A.M. at the First Christian/Trinity United Methodist Church located at 1401 West New York Ave., DeLand, FL. In honor of Bill's memory and his compassionate nature, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude's or the Methodist Children's Home in lieu of flowers. These contributions will continue his legacy of making a positive impact on the lives of others, just as he did throughout his remarkable journey.
